Despite this, urban dwellers have built a $10 trillion informal economy. They have used their cities as laboratories of innovation and entrepreneurship, and have worked to create solutions that bridge gaps in the provision of financial services, health care, and transportation. Check out another awesome CGI VFX mixed short film by the talented Dan Kokotajlo! It's an abstract film tackling our perception of innovation…. “We tend to rewrite the histories of technological innovation, making myths about a guy who had a great idea that changed the world. In reality, though, innovation isn’t the goal; it’s everything that gets you there… It’s the important leaps forward that synthesize lots of ideas, and it’s the belly-up failures that teach us what not to do. When we ignore how innovation actually works, we make it hard to see what’s happening right in front of us today…Worse, the fairy-tale view of history implies that innovation has an end. It doesn’t. What we want and what we need keeps changing. [It’s] all the little failures, trivialities and not-quite-solved mys...

What topics would you like to see us cover on future Movie Lists? Let us know in the comments! THE LIST O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000) Directors: Coen Brothers This musical’s visual effects are all in the color-correction. And the result is every bit as eye-popping as any monster movie, we think. The Perfect Storm (2000) Director: Wolfgang Petersen Before The Perfect Storm, water was either droplets, or it was a mass of liquid. Computers couldn’t parse the two motion patterns… until The Perfect Storm charted a new course in effects. The Lord of the Rings (Trilogy, 2001-2003) Director: Peter Jackson Peter Jackson and WETA Digital built some amazing AI, so that all those orcs, goblins, and Urok-hai could move independently, and realistically, in MASSIVE battle scenes. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001) Directors: Hirunobu Sakaguchi, Motonori Sakakibara Not a successful movie - but a successful use of motion capture technology… and we wouldn’t have Andy Serkis as Golum or Avatar without the early, pioneering work of this film. The Matrix Reloaded (2003) Directors: The Wachowskis’ movies are perhaps most iconic for the bullet time technique from the first Matrix movie, but Universal Capture, which debuted in the second film, is probably the most notable contribution to movie technology to come out to the trilogy. The Polar Express (2004) Director: Robert Zemeckis The first film to use all existing motion capture technology to create fully CGI performances out of actual movements from actual actors (mostly Tom Hanks) to create all the movements in the film. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004) Director: Kerry Conran The advent of the digital backlot - shooting live actors on mostly green- or blue-screen sets, is a fairly common occurrence today (Sin City, 300, and the Hobbit are recent examples), Sky Captain was the first film to create digital landscapes for their characters to inhabit. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006) Director: Gore Verbinski CGI characters may have been a common occurrence by this point, but until the crew of Davy Jones’ ship walked (scuttled?) onto the screen, CGI performances and live actors had to be filmed separately. No more, thanks to ILM’s Imocap technology! Avatar (2009) Director: James Cameron Of course Avatar had to make our list (James Cameron does love innovating!). It’s the culmination of pretty much every technique we’ve described so far, plus some 3D thrown in to boot! Most notably, Avatar pioneered the use of live rendering, and facial capture as large-scale set pieces were being filmed. Gravity (2013) Director: Alfonso Cuaròn Even with all the advancements in creating digital objects, creating convincing light on said objects remained a challenge. Until Alfonso Cuaròn’s Gravity debuted a system where lighting was digitally calculated, and then actually projected onto actors faces.

Watch this absolutely beautiful and Award-Winning CGI animated short film by talented animation filmmaker and composer, Evan Viera! For more information about this film please visit the links below: SYNOPSIS Through the eyes of a young girl suffering from mental illness, CALDERA glimpses into a world of psychosis and explores a world of ambiguous reality and the nature of life and death. DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT CALDERA is inspired by my father's struggle with schizoaffective disorder. In states of delusion, my father has danced on the rings of Saturn, spoken with angels, and fled from his demons. He has lived both a fantastical and haunting life, but one that's invisible to the most of us. In our differing understanding of reality, we blindly mandate his medication, assimilate him to our marginalizing culture, and entirely misinterpret him for all he is worth. CALDERA aims to not only venerate my father, but all brilliant minds forged in the haunted depths of psychosis. ∆ ∆ ∆ DOWNLOAD THE SOUNDTRACK - https://orchidtheatre.bandcamp.com/ http://evanviera.com - - https://twitter.com/_evanviera instagram.com/evanviera - - http://facebook.com/evanvieraanimation AWARDS Prix Ars Electronica Award of Distinction Award of Innovation - Seattle International Film Festival Best Animated Film - Rome Independent Film Festival Best Animated Film - Rockport Film Festival Best Short - View Social Awards Nominated for "Best Picture" - Maverick Movie Awards Nominated for "Best Director" - Maverick Movie Awards HISTORY CALDERA was helmed by Evan Viera (Director/Composer/Co-Writer) and Chris Bishop (Co-writer/Animation Supervisor/Story Artist) and was produced at Hampshire College. In isolation, profit-driven strategies and philanthropic approaches alone cannot overcome the obstacles to achieving broad and sustainable development. Hybrid solutions such as impact investing—which integrate financial profits with pro-social and environmental objectives—can generate both financial returns for investors and social returns for communities. Latin America is emerging as a hub for innovative financing structures for development, including social impact bonds and novel ways to support, incubate, and expand social entrepreneurial efforts. This session will examine how partnerships between entrepreneurs, investors, and communities are using innovative financing to create concrete change for those living at the base of the pyramid. Moderator: Nicole Etchart, Co-founder and Co-CEO, NESsT Participants: Eliza Erikson, Director, Investments, Omidyar Network Natalia Mouhapé, Senior Investment Manager, Bamboo Finance André Spínola, National Manager of Territorial Development, Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Services (SEBRAE) Ricardo José Terán, Co-founder, Agora Partnerships NETWORKING

[It’s] all the little failures, trivialities and not-quite-solved mysteries that make the successes possible…. This is what innovation looks like. It’s messy, and it’s awesome.” Maggie Koerth-Baker // New York Times CREDITS // Director // Dan Kokotajlo (www.dankokotajlo.com @DanPKoko) Art Director // Sawoozer Wang (behance.net/akitipe) CG // +Akitipe Studios CG Team Lead // Lance Ni CG // Juin Chang Lance Ni Ric Hung 2D / VFX // Samuel Stephenson (rarebreeds.tv) Sound // Matthew Wilcock (ZeligSound.com) DoP // Dan Stafford-Clark (stafford-clark.com) Camera Assistant // Duncan Kemp Hair & Make Up // Lucy Pearson Associate Producer // Marcie MacLellan Concept Artist // Tom Yi Ric Hung Actress // Bella 1st AD // Biko Mason Thanks // George Hedon Tim Bright Mariana Acuna Juan Sanchez Natasha Mason Amy Henderson PLEASE LINK US: VIMEO IDs (please credit on vimeo) Dan PK vimeo.com/user2768515 +Akitipe Studios vimeo.com/akitipe Zelig Sound vimeo.com/user2479988 Rare Breeds vimeo.com/user9291953 FACEBOOK IDs (please link us if you post on Facebook) Dan Kokotajlo facebook.com/dan.pk01 +Akitipe Studios facebook.com/AKITIPE Zelig Sound facebook.com/zeligsound SUBSCRIBE - to TheCGBros for more inspiring content! http://www.youtube.com/user/thecgbro?sub_confirmation=1
